E3 2015: Fallout 4


Let me start off by saying that I have never been a die-hard fan of the Fallout series, I enjoyed Fallout 3 and played some of Fallout New Vegas, but I always had my issues with the series itself. While the story was always interesting to a degree, the gameplay was clunky, the combat was slow and just didn’t work at times, the AI was beyond stupid, and it seemed creating a character that didn’t look like something out of The Addams Family was next to impossible. I know I sound harsh, but I did enjoy my time with the games, I just always felt like there was so much more that was untouched and ignored. When I got word that a Fallout 4 trailer had been released after years of development, I was genuinely concerned as long years of development does not always make a good game — Dead Island, anyone? — but I decided to watch the trailer all the same in hopes of seeing something fresh and new. I was far from disappointed. Maybe it was my lack of interest or just my worry that it would be horrible, but I watched that trailer all the way through, and then I did it again, and again, taking in every detail I possibly could and I was excited the entire time.

Fallout 4 Character CreatorI sadly did not get to tune in to much of E3 this year, but you know I watched the Fallout 4 presentation the next day online. All the things I was concerned about had been changed: the combat was smoother and flowed well, the AI even seemed to work better though we didn’t get to see much of it, and don’t even get me started on the character creation. If there is one thing that makes an RPG for me, it’s the ability to completely change my character the way I want, and oh boy did they do it well. Plus they also gave my character some personality; while a silent protagonist is usually the way to go when forging your own story, I’m actually very excited to see how the character is affected by the new world around them.

200 years after the bombs fell, your character emerges from the vault into his/her town to find everything destroyed. How did they survive that long? I can’t wait to find out.

It seems like this game will be diving into the lore of the vaults and what they are actually for — because most of them weren’t for saving people at all — and that is so exciting for me. I didn’t know much about the vaults, but after seeing the Fallout 4 trailer I decided to do some digging on the lore and it only made my hype even more intense. All of the vaults were their own separate testing facilities, and given that the character was in theirs for 200 years, that might be the case this time around.

However, even with all that, what got me the most interested was the stronghold building and crafting. You’re now able to scrap the materials around you from buildings, items, garbage, etc. To create your own buildings, walls, towers, pretty much anything you can think of and it works so well. Everything connects in a way that just makes you feel good, like when you put a USB in on the first try. As an added bonus, most of the structures are customizable with lights and things like that, and you can also add shops and defenses as people will actually join you and become a part of your community. You need to grow crops and set up water wells to keep people alive and I assume you will need medical supplies, ammo, and guns as well. This feature is amazing to me, not only is it interesting, it’s new! They’ve added something that they did not have before, and while it has been seen before in other games many times, I feel like it will completely change the way Fallout is played and I’m very excited to pick it up on November 10th.

Bethesda really proved me wrong this past weekend, they stepped up and really showed what they are able to do. Coming from someone who didn’t really care about the Fallout series, I hope you give it a chance if you haven’t already as it certainly looks like it’s going to turn out being something great.
